What Matters When Building Your Biz On Social Media?
And ways to make sure you're not "posting just to post.
Hola familia,
This is your mid-week check-in, reminding you to hydrate, moisturize and enjoy the last few weeks of summer. Pumpkin spice + atole season are approaching us and I could not be more excited (even though, I’ve been having a wonderful pool girl summer with Henry, see photo).
A few months ago I finally bit the bullet and hired someone wonderful to help me create content for social media (she’ll be featured in an upcoming newsletter, don’t you worry), but before then I’ve had social media strategists create content plans for me that never really aligned. And it wasn’t until yesterday during the Jefa in Training Circle’s exclusive workshop by Amy Evans and Moe Lincoln of Kings Kitchen Media, that I learned why.
These social media strategists were giving me content ideas that weren’t aligned with my brand, that weren’t focused on my story and that weren’t aligned with my target audience.
And that, familia, is the most important thing you have to think about when building your business on social media. Because at the end of the day, if you’re not connecting to the people you want to be selling to, spending hours putting together reels and carousels, seems quite silly, doesn’t it?
The workshop was full of gems but here were (in my opinion) the most important takeaways:
Your target audience is not EVERYONE. Por favor remember that.
If you don’t know if you’re interacting with your target audience, do this exercise: Pick your biggest social media platform + scroll through your social feed. Are the people you are connected with using hashtags and keywords that you’re using? Have you been providing them with value they are looking for? Are you even seeing your target audience at all? If your answer is no to any of these, it’s time to get to werk.
Approximately 1/3 of your posts should incorporate some elements of your personal story. Humanize your brand. People want to see it. (You’d be surprised how many clients I’ve attracted through just simply having the same chronic health condition. People want to connect with real people, not automated content machines, trust us.)
Establish the value of your posts - the most common ones are to educate, inspire or entertain. Don’t just post because your social media manager said you had to.
When it comes to trends, do what feels good to you. “You don’t serve the trend, the trend serves you.”
“Don’t post and ghost.” Engage 15 mins before and 15 mins (minimum) after you post to see a boost in activity.
Analyze your metrics. Look at things like views/watch time, profile taps, likes + comments to figure out if your content is resonating + how likely it is to convert a follower to a paying customer.
Use a tool like Metricool to schedule posts to save you time and energy. There is a free version.
If you’re struggling with what to post, maybe you don’t have a social media problem, and maybe it’s a branding problem?
And lastly, I’ll leave you with one of my favorite Amy Evans analogies.
Feeling like you need a boost with your social media strategy? Want to learn how to connect with your audience more efficiently online? Book a Happy Hour with Kings Kitchen Media and tell them La Hoja sent you. They’re offering a sweet deal of $125 sessions for the next 30 days.

Get creative with me?
I’m leaning more and more into my create + elevate era + I’ve been feeling extremely called to start The Artist’s Way. For those of you who don’t know what it is, I’ll leave the link for you - but it’s essentially a 12 week journey by Julia Cameron to tap into your creativity with daily morning journaling, reflective prompts and more.
Join me?
Of course, I’m feeling called to do this during my busiest season, and so I cannot commit to hosting a weekly discussion group. However, I’m serious about completing this and would love to host monthly check-ins + a WhatsApp group for accountability, conversations and support on the journey!
Potential dates I have in mind are: 9/27 at 4PM PST (chapters 1 to 4) , 10/18 at 4PM PST (chapters 5 to 8) and 11/15 at 4PM PST (chapters 9 to 12 + overall recap).
I am not charging for this (because I too will be experimenting haha), and I’m only looking for 10 people to join my group. Let me know ASAP if I should add you to the WhatsApp group. It’ll be fun!
PS: Important news is headed your way in the next week about how we can work together in Q4. Stay tuned.
Until next time, stay creative <3
I would like to join your artists way group!
